Maths

At Flushdyke, our aim is to promote the application of Maths in the wider world. We strongly believe that Maths is essential to everyday life, critical to science, technology and engineering and is needed in most jobs. With this in mind, a high-quality Maths curriculum provides our young mathematicians with a foundation for understanding the world, the ability to reason mathematically, and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject.

At Flushdyke, we are passionate in believing that the mastery approach of practical, visual and abstract elements allows children to develop a deeper, clearer understanding of the concepts of Maths. Our children access varied fluency questions that promote a secure understanding of the various Maths strands, especially in number and calculation. They are encouraged to show answers in multiple ways. As a school, we utilise White Rose Maths Hub overviews, planning and its mastery approach, whilst individualising the content to ensure that our lessons are engaging and children's lights are 'switched on'.

It is our goal, that by the time our children leave Flushdyke, they are taught to make rich connections across mathematical ideas to support their fluency through a wide range of reasoning and problem-solving contexts at a deeper level. We actively encourage our children to apply their mathematical knowledge and skills to other subjects across the curriculum. By hearing and speaking a rich mathematical language, it allows our children to develop their mathematical vocabulary and to support their ability to explain, reason or justify their answers and solutions. Reading is promoted to engage our children in Maths, supporting the various strands of the subject.

We are proud of the way we teach Maths at Flushdyke. In 2023, 100% of our children achieved the expected standard at the end of Key Stage 2 with a further 27% achieving greater depth
