History

At Flushdyke, our aim is to provide a high-quality history curriculum which develops children’s confidence and capabilities as historians by bringing history to life through hands on, engaging and challenging experiences in the classroom and through inspirational enrichments to the topics.

Our curriculum is designed to enable all children to gain a coherent knowledge of local, national, European and world history, and allow children to develop and apply the skills which young historians need. Through carefully planned learning experiences, we inspire children’s curiosity about the past by immersing them in opportunities to develop their skills for historical enquiry.  We support our children to develop a secure understanding of local history, Britain’s past and its influences, and that of the wider world.

Through our carefully designed two-year rolling topics, our children develop their chronological understanding and, in being curious historians, learn how to analyse and interpret a wide range of historical sources. This supports their ability to appreciate the causes and consequences of key events in history that have influenced Britain and their own lives today. We also aim to promote an awareness of the connections between events, significant people and societies in the past and the British Values underpinning modern day life.

It is our goal that, by the time children leave Flushdyke and continue their journey in education, they have developed enquiring minds, with the capacity to ask perceptive questions and argue logically.  Through our exciting and meaningful topics, we aim to ignite, in our children, a lifelong thirst for historical learning.
