Design and Technology

At Flushdyke, our aim is to provide a high-quality design and technology curriculum which immerses children in real life contexts for design, through inspiring and practical activities where children are taught the skills, knowledge and understanding needed for the process of designing and making.

Our curriculum is designed to ensure that pupils are given the opportunity to design and make products that solve real and relevant problems which are current locally, nationally and locally (e.g. sustainability) and apply the skills that a designer needs. Through shared texts, children are encouraged to look at the wider world of product design, exploring the work of engineers, architects and other designers.

We support children to be active learners, to have the confidence to ‘have a go’ and have the resilience to persist if a challenge occurs through carefully planned learning experiences. We allow for collaboration and discussion around design ideas and time to evaluate their own work and others.  We aim to provide an awareness of the impact of design and technology on everyday life and the wider world through the evaluation of past and present technology.

It is our goal, that by the time children leave Flushdyke they have; the passion for designing and making, key skills a designer and maker requires and have an in-depth understanding of the impact design and technology has on every day life and the wider world. Through our practical real-life approach to design and technology, we aim to spark the passion in children for designing and making whilst becoming enterprising, resourceful and capable citizens.
