Class 1 - Early Years
What makes our EYFS different at Flushdyke:
Small family feel, where no child is left behind: With just over 100 pupils from 3 to 11, we are a small, inclusive and thriving community where every child is truly known as an individual learner.
Only 15 places in Reception - truly small by design: Unlike large entry schools, we offer just 15 Reception places. That means exceptional adult-to-child ratios, deeper relationships, quicker identification of needs, and more time for every child to talk, be heard and be challenged. It’s the best of both worlds - the resources of a primary school with the nurturing, tailored approach of a small setting.
Qualified Teacher + Level 3 Support at all times: Every session is led by a qualified, experienced teacher supported by a Level 3 qualified practitioner. Not on a rota, not shared across school - with your children, at all times. That means expert curriculum delivery, skilled early identification, and consistent, high-quality interaction for every child, every day.
An Ambitious, Knowledge-Rich Curriculum: Our Nursery and Reception follow the revised statutory EYFS Framework 2025 and deliver far more than childcare - we deliver a sequenced, ambitious curriculum. Built around the prime and specific areas, our talk-rich, play-based approach is driven by high-quality continuous provision, explicit vocabulary teaching, early reading, early number, and the Characteristics of Effective Learning. Every experience is carefully planned to build on what children know and can do, preparing them with confidence and deep foundations for Year 1 and beyond.
Safer Eating Assured: Children's safety is at the heart of every mealtime. In line with new statutory Safer Eating requirements, staff sit facing children while they eat, a Paediatric First Aider is present at every meal and snack, and we have robust procedures for allergy management, choking prevention, safe food preparation and preventing food sharing.
Healthy Foundations: We have regard to the new DfE Early Years Nutrition Guidance 2025. We provide balanced menus, respect cultural, religious and medical dietary needs, and work in close partnership with parents on packed lunches, weaning stages and safe textures to promote a positive relationship with food.
Outdoor Learning & Adventure: Learning doesn't stop at the classroom door. We believe the outdoors is our best classroom and an extension of our curriculum. Children have daily access to our outdoor provision where they build physical development, resilience, risk-management and curiosity about the natural world.
Independence & Teamwork: We encourage our children to develop independence, confidence and teamwork - actively developing the leaders of the future to be resilient, kind and collaborative, ready to Fly High at Flushdyke and beyond!
